Anatolian Shepherd dogs (Goban Kopegi or Anatolian Karabash Dogs) originated on the Anatolian Plateau in Turkey, close to the geographic birthplace of human society (Fertile Crescent). They were bred as guardian breed more than 6,000 years ago. Anatolians entered the USA in 1950s, and were registered by AKC in 1995. Today they are appreciated for their loyalty, independence, hardiness, and faithfulness to the job of guardian or family watchdog.
From ancient times Anatolian Shepherd dogs served as shepherds' frontline defense from predators. Breeders created the dog of the same size and colors with the livestock they guarded in order to fit in among the flock undetected by predators. Anatolians had to guard their livestock at all times, in remote areas, so they were sure to make independent decisions. Anatolians can withstand harsh climate and nomadic way of life. Scientists say the Anatolian Shepherd dog has Molosser ancestry.
