Loyalty, independence, and hardiness are called the three major characteristics in the breed. These are alert and smart dogs. Highly territorial, this breed is a natural guard and a faithful family pet. The breed was accepted in the AKC Miscellaneous class in 1996.

An ancient guardian breed with a long working history, this dog takes its roots in the Tibetan Mastiff and Roman Mollosian war dogs. They used to accompany the nomadic shepherds.
