Loyalty, independence, and hardiness are called the three major characteristics in the breed. These are alert and smart dogs. Highly territorial, this breed is a natural guard and a faithful family pet. The breed was accepted in the AKC Miscellaneous class in 1996.

An ancient guardian breed with a long working history, this dog takes its roots in the Tibetan Mastiff and Roman Mollosian war dogs. They used to accompany the nomadic shepherds. The first representatives of the breed came to America in the 1950s. Most enthusiastic anatolian sheppard breeders will always have a picture handy to show off.
