Anatolian Shepherds - Dogs - Housing and Training

Anatolian Shepherd dogs cannot be solitary; they are oriented to human companionship. The dogs are not the easiest to control due to their independent, protective nature and large size. The temperament of a purebred Anatolian is self-confident but deferential to the leader. Anatolians are sure to take up the role of a leader if the owner is not in charge. These dogs test their masters for some time to see if becoming the leader is possible. So Anatolian dogs require a handler who knows how to lead and persuade, not a meek or the novice dog owner.

Anatolian Shepherds require a large fenced yard. They like to expand their territory and dig. Anatolians bark to protect the territory and they can be very noisy without proper training. Anatolians are very dominant dogs and cannot tolerate other pets.

Unsocialized Anatolian Shepherd dogs and those who refuse to submit to their masters are aggressive, uncontrollable and even dangerous. Also Anatolian males cannot live peacefully with other male dogs. As for their relationships with children, Anatolians are very good, but shouldn't be left alone because of their size, as they can easily knock a child down. Anatolian Shepherd dogs treat children as a flock that should be protected.

Anatolians are easy to train in puppyhood. They are intelligent and anything they learn stick with them with minimal reinforcement. The puppy should be kept close to the family and given lots of obedience training and socialization to make a good family guardian. Almost all puppies go through a destructive phase and should be corrected and supervised. Puppies exiled from the house grow up unsociable, fearful or unprovokedly aggressive, and unhappy. They may develop excessive barking or digging. The Anatolian Shepherd breed takes a long time to mature - about 4 years. Adolescence is an especially difficult time for Anatolians, their breed instincts are kicking in and so are their growth hormones. The master must always be fair and kind to Anatolian Shepherd dogs.
